Our Work

DBEN - CPA Logo - color no bg.png

The Durham Black Educators’ Network (DBEN) seeks to recognize and celebrate the achievements of students in the Durham District School Board (DDSB) and highlight them as role models and leaders in the community. We understand that success does not happen by accident but with purposeful intention. We, educators, mentors, community members, must create opportunities to develop their skills so that youth are directed toward their paths of success.

The DBEN Cultivating Possibilities Awards are presented annually to DDSB students who identify as Black. In keeping with our vision of cultivating possibilities, students are recognized for their exemplary leadership both in school and in the community but are always encouraged to give back by taking part in and contributing to the next year’s events.

To date, there have been over 200 elementary and high school student applicants recognized for these awards, and over 60 scholarship winners since the original DBEN Activating Student Success Awards began in the 2012-2013 school year.

This year, we invite you to join us in supporting Black student excellence for this year’s 10th-anniversary virtual celebration.

By joining us in this partnership, you will be inspiring Black students to achieve their aspirations and dreams. Our award winners can step confidently into their future, knowing that there is a community standing behind them, believing in their abilities, and recognizing their strengths and potential.

Along with many of our current sponsors, your organization or business can stand alongside these bright, young minds to let them know you believe in them.

Your contribution goes a long way in supporting future pathways for many Black students in the Durham Region! A few of those ways are:

  • Helping build the next generation of Black leaders and support their academic success and future pathways

  • Strengthening your public impact by demonstrating your ongoing commitment to supporting the diversity across Durham Region

  • Connecting your organization or company brand to the empowerment and celebration of Black youth in the community

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters for their generous commitment to our awards programs. These contributions help to make our vision a reality, as we work to inspire Black students in the Durham District School Board to believe in their own strengths and possibilities.
