The DBEN Cultivating Possibilities Awards, originally known as the DBEN Activating Student Success Awards, were established in 2012. The program was inspired by our work with renowned educator Principal Baruti Kafele, whose message encouraged us to further uplift and mobilize the academic and community leadership of our students.

These awards and scholarships recognize achievement while encouraging and empowering students from Grades 7 to 12 across the Black Diaspora to pursue their goals with confidence and purpose.

As our reach has expanded, so too has our impact. In 2025, we proudly marked the 13th anniversary of this initiative. With the support of our membership, community partners and sponsors we awarded $25,000 in scholarship to 33 students. While the program has been renamed the DBEN Cultivating Possibilities Awards, its mission remains unchanged. We continue to work alongside families, educators, and community partners to support the upward journey of Black youth, while also honouring the allies and elders whose guidance and contributions make this work possible.
